Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two connector pins and they have different functions however the best method of testing it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing at all. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when i start the engine without sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one remains shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, but i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about timing of the fuel injector, for example. To do this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire in the gear. If you are experiencing any of these problems, it is likely that your sensor is going bad and requires replacement audi key fob. The good thing is that they are very affordable and readily available, especially in the case of an Bosch unit which is what ours are. Alternately, GM's version this part is an option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a variety of issues in your vehicle. You should see a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these two points.
