Item upgrading allows players to enhance their weapons and equipment with new affixes that boost the base stats of the item or providing additional benefits. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory and access the kiln.

Upgrade components

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important differences from the previous versions. Gear is now broken down into tracks, and items can only be upgraded a set number of times before being "leveled out." The costs for upgrading increase with each level, however the materials required do not. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a specific few items and maximize the impact of these items, instead of spreading the cost of upgrades across several pieces.
