Scooters and motorcycles

Driving license category A2 is the next level of motorcycle driving licence. It permits the use of small-sized motorcycles (up to 50cc) and mopeds with a maximum cubic capacity of 125cc. The goal of the class is to let you slowly climb the ladder of engine power and cautiously fantasize about the possibility of a bigger one. The test is a little more difficult than the first category, and you will need to take more theoretical classes for it.

The category A2 driver's licence is valid up to the age of 24. It is valid alongside a category A1 car driving licence or as part an interim driver's license. If you are over 24 years old, however you require a full category A driver's licence to operate motorcycles with more than 35 kW.

You can get your group A1 license at the age of 16 (in Denmark, Malta, and Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic; in Germany, Hungary, Iceland and in the following countries: Latvia, Lithuania, Italy and Poland). Once you are over 16 years old, you will need to pass the motorbike test under the category A2. You must pass the test prior to turning 18. After two years you can move to category A.

After passing the test for category A2, you're permitted to ride a motorcycle, either with or without sidecar, and vehicles with up to 35 kW of power. The vehicles must also have a power/weight ratio of no greater than 0.2 kg/kW and cannot be made from a vehicle that has twice the power of the maximum.

If you've passed the two-part test for a moped or a motorcycle of a lower category since 1st Jul 1996, you are able to skip the theory test and only take the practical exam. You can choose to ride a small scooter or moped equipped with L plates, or obtain the AM license that allows you to ride bikes with a capacity of up to 50cc with a top-speed of 45mph. AM licences are only valid if you've passed your theory test, and have completed nine hours of instruction at a driving school.

Campers, motorhomes and lorries are also covered. This category can also include vehicles like hearses, ambulances and carryalls, which are designed to transport more than eight people or have a maximum authorised mass of more than 750 kg. Drivers who have an A1 license are able to operate vehicles of this kind with a trailer that has an authorized maximum weight of up to 775kg.

To operate a vehicle in this class, you have to pass the theory test. To pass you need to take 12 lessons lasting 90 minutes of the basic material, and 4 additional lessons lasting 90 minutes for the additional (category A2). The test for the theory requires a minimum score of 70 percent.

If you pass the theory test, you will have to pass a practical driving test on private property and on public roads. If you pass both tests, you will receive an application for a driving license. This request should be submitted to the local authorities three years after passing the practical test.

Once you have passed your driving test, you can begin driving vehicles in the category A2. In some countries, if you hold an A1 license for two years, there's no need to take an additional test to get an A2 driving license that permits you to operate motorcycles up 35 kW. This lets you learn on less powerful two-wheelers prior to upgrading to more powerful machines.

If you have a driving licence of category A2, you are able to use a tricycle so long as it has the capacity of 125cc and an output power of 11kW. This category was formerly part of the A license. All drivers who received a full category A licence prior to the 19th January 2013 were entitled to use mopeds, and they were able to keep that right.

Motor vehicles with five or more wheels

This category includes power-driven vehicles designed to be used on the road, and for transport of goods or people. They must have at least two or three wheels in contact with the ground and a saddle or seat for the driver and passenger, and an engine that can produce speeds of 20 miles per hour or more. These vehicles are usually equipped with a steering wheel and brakes. They can also be controlled and travelled in reverse. In some instances the hoods of these vehicles can be opened. Historically, this designation has used to describe trucks (van mini-vans, mini-vans panel, pickup sport utility) and buses that carry 16 or more passengers. However, a different set of federal requirements that govern uniform licensing standards for commercial vehicle drivers uses a slightly different definition which excludes vehicles with gross weight ratings of 26,001 or more.

This type of license is only valid if the cylinder volume and the power of the motor do not exceed 125 cubic centimeters and 15 kilowatts, respectively. Manufacturers, importers, and import specialists often request agency interpretations of the proper classification of their vehicles. In the end, NHTSA has developed a number of guidelines that can help guide the classification of these vehicles. These guidelines include:

Motor vehicles with trailers

The category A2 is comprised of motor vehicles with trailers. These are not vehicles that are pulled by the driver, but are pulled behind larger vehicles, such as cars. For instance an tractor pulling trailers would fall into this category, as would small trucks designed for carrying loads, such as those employed by plumbers or painters to transport tools and equipment to their work sites. The maximum authorized mass (MAM) in this category, is 8,250kg.
