The latest flagship model from iRobot is also the most intelligent. It comes with advanced features like Enhanced Dirt Detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that can wash mop pads autonomously).

It's also the sole robot vacuum/mop to score a perfect 10 out of 10 in our tests. This is due to the combination of high-tech sensors, including a structured light system, a camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that can completely autonomously refill and empty its base station, and it boasts its own self-cleaning mop pads.

As with other iRobot models as well, the X40 is easy to use, offering an easy mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant. The only downside is that the X40 still a noisy unit. This can be a concern in the mornings prior to work or at night when you are trying to fall asleep.

It's also quite expensive, but it's not as pricey as the Ecovacs Omni or Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra both of which are equally powerful and look better. If you're willing some more volume and some additional cost, this is a very efficient two-in-one device that should please almost everyone.

It also has a front-mounted camera for real-time hazard detection, although this wasn't quite reliable in our tests and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum cleaner has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to complete the task. It also features "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the amount of time the vac works and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home depending on the degree of dirt they tend to be.

For larger homes it's recommended to choose a model with spot or zone cleaning modes that let you tell the robot to clean a specific area of your home by using the app or via voice commands. If you have furniture, a stair-mode is also useful. For families with busy schedules recharge functions and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to resume where it left off could be very beneficial.

It also mops using one pad and a rotating motion which is cleaner than the majority of the robot mop cleaners that we've examined. It's also highly self-sufficient, with a full-featured app and a self emptying base that is washable.

The well-designed iRobot app guides you through a mapping session that collects data about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you mark on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules or set up the spot-cleaning. It can also be used to it to prioritize the most soiled areas for better performance. The app also gives access to many features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.
